Frequently asked questions

Does the app work offline?

Yes, for what it has already downloaded. Sites, photos, the field guide, tips, and the latest daily conditions are saved on your iPhone and stay available without a connection; the app checks for new content when it is back online. Live tide, surf, and weather readings need a connection.

How do alerts work?

Alerts are optional notifications your iPhone schedules for itself. Choose sites and the times you are free in the Alerts tab, and the app lets you know about forecast windows that meet each site's tide and surf guidance. Forecasts change, so check conditions again before you go.

Why does the app ask for my location?

Location is optional. If you allow it, your iPhone uses it to show nearby tidepools; it is not sent to Oh Tidepool. The app works fully without it.

Can the app tell me a tidepool is safe or open?

No. Oh Tidepool is a planning aid. Safety, closures, and water-quality advisories are issued by the agencies that manage each shore, such as California State Parks, the National Park Service, and county health departments. Follow posted signs and lifeguards, watch the waves, and turn back when conditions do not match the plan.

How do I share a photo of a tidepool?

Tap Share a photo of this place on a site's page. It opens your own Mail app with an email to support@nduwork.com, subject “Photo of” the site. Attach your photo and send it. By sending it, you allow Oh Tidepool to use it under CC BY 4.0 with credit to you. Every photo is reviewed before it is published, and its location data is removed.

How do I report a mistake?

Tap Report a mistake on a site's page. It opens an email to support@nduwork.com, subject “Correction for” the site. Tell us what looks wrong: a photo, a detail, or directions. Photo credits and licences are listed on the app image credits page.

How do I suggest a new site?

Tap Suggest a site in Settings, under About. It opens an email to support@nduwork.com, subject “Please add a site”. Say where the tidepools are and, if you know, how people get there.

You can also email support@nduwork.com directly for any of these.
